The reading chart was designed to track each book read by each child. Once a week, the group would meet with the Director and a volunteer adult to discuss the reading and review the comprehension questions for understanding. The books varied by reading levels and assorted topics. Participants were then given an opportunity to begin reading, using the books supplied. Incentives were provided for reading and behavioral improvements. Transformative Outcomes In the beginning of the program the participants were very enthusiastic.

Some of the children who did not enjoy reading developed a liking for reading. They seemed to gain self-confidence and better self-control during the sessions.

As the program progressed, our strong readers began assisting weak readers and assisted in leading the discussion. The program was a success because our goals were met. Our primary goal was to assist in the improvement of reading skills and to impact self-control among our youth and children. The program also satisfied the vision which was to inspire the children to read more, to sharpen their reading skills, and to encourage them to learn about topics they were interested in.

It is my recommendation that this program be tried by others with the following changes: I am sure the presiding elders are keeping you posted as to when your winter report is due in to them. I am asking each congregation to do your best as it relates to reporting your general funds.

Because of your support we have been able to meet our obligations to the General Church.

I am prayerful this trend will continue. Over the past four years, we have devoted our outreach efforts to the homeless, children in foster care, and individuals in prison. These remain our areas of focus. However, I am asking that we begin to move our Prison Ministry from theory to practice. It is time for some of us to begin ministering behind the walls of correctional institutions.

I would like to see some of our churches do some form of ministry with the incarcerated or formerly incarcerated in local communities. Pastors please know that the Senior Ministry Coalition is a ministry which I fully endorse.

We are partnering with AARP to create a best practice ministry with seniors throughout our Episcopal district. Your support and encouragement are needed. I am asking all pastors in the Cincinnati area to join me in making this happen as soon as possible. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

The Call for Prayers: I am calling on all members to be in prayer for our nation, district, pastors, and congregations. Please keep the families of Reverends Shanklin, Shyne, and Reid in your prayers.
