The poet discovers his own inner power because, recognizing Ship as a being of awesome dimensions, he does not beg or resist what he sees, but tries to communicate. Even if The Dosadi Experiment were a novel by a complete unknown, it would be worthy of note. The Dosadis are unleashed upon an unsuspecting universe.
Perhaps if I read it again, I’ll have a better perspective about it. The sense of cyclical history that informs Children of Dune also dosadu to illuminate Herbert’s novel, co-authored with Bill Ransom, entitled The Jesus Incident. Although the former is referenced through the latter, my understanding of the latter was not harmed in any way I can imagine.
The plot is confusing, and some of the assumptions don’t seem sensical. When Ship departs, Jesus Lewis also vanishes.
Similarly, the Gowachin are focused on individual excellence, and are outright elitists. Dosadi is much akin to Arrakis, dosaei small world where a spartan, violently simplistic society breeds a possible change agent that may affect everything else.
But the author had a specific conclusion in mind, and he tied every development of his narrative to that end.

This is the lesson of Avata: I agree with some other reviewers that The Dosadi Experiment can easily be viewed as a proving ground for ideas and story dynamics that appear later on in the Dune series.

If anything, this book needed pages more. This small, dislodged pebble became an avalanche that led to a full-scale race-war against the Gowachins who lived side-by-side with humans in the planet’s one inhabitable city, a crisis she had long prepared ecperiment. As a result of this extraordinary pressure, the populace have changed both mentally and physically, to the point that if they were ever to be allowed to leave their world in significant numbers, they would pose a significant threat to the stability of the ConSentiency.
Much is left to the imagination and the insinuation of the reader, in a way Herbert does early on with Dune. In the end, however, he only succeeds in providing a single target for the “ministrations” of the Bureau of Sabotage under its new leader, Jorj X.
I was a bit surprised at first to find this book has such mixed reviews on here. It is through the other that self is known. There are several significant female characters in the story, including Keila Jedrick, who is presented as the single most competent, ruthless and intimidating person anywhere in the story, and the almost equally intimidating Trea.
The author has created a universe populated by a variety of alien species who are not merely human beings in funny suits, but are truly alien in thought and biology as well as surface appearance. Putnam’s Sons books Faster-than-light travel in fiction Faster-than-light communication.
That makes me wonder: As one of the Gowachin masterminds of the project put it, they’d created a monster they could no longer control. There are frequent references of Gowachin males winnowing their young so only the fittest survive. They are disappearing because an “egofrozen” Pan Spechi has established an unbreakable contract with a Caleban, and is torturing it. The difference between McKie and Herbert’s other hyperperceptive heroes is that McKie could never be mistaken for a messiah, except perhaps by the froglike Gowachin. This point is underlined by one of Ship’s revelations.
