What is particularly frightening about the holocaust to me is that very few non jewish neighbors and friends took a stand against it. Perhaps the most entertaining section of the book revolves around the insufferably arrogant Claude Lanzmann, the French of course director of the nine-hour documentary Shoah. Before I read the book I believed Hitler to be a profoundly evil man and that there would not have been a holocaust without him. I wanted more at the end of the book, a more comprehensive summative statement. Often historians are emphatic that Hitler was convinced he was doing GOOD saving the world from a scourge, saving the Aryan race. Rosenbaum stresses how Hitler and the thugs around him uses counterfeiting and blackmail incessantly.

Since none of these things have been substantiated and the author is dismissive of elaborate theories of Hitler’s racism and mass murder based on expalining, why does he spend like three chapters on them?
