The personal anecdotes taken from the crew’s diaries bring all the characters, and I do mean characters, to life. There is something about the black and white photos taken in this mysterious light that make each pic a gem. How he managed to take pictures during these struggles and to find a way to bring them home is truly amazing.

The subjects she chooses are compelling and her writing is evocative. The mettle of which these explorers are made is other-worldly. The few main players in the story are easy to distinguish, but most of the rest of the crew are difficult to tell apart.

This was such a great read and what made it even better was her partnership with a national archive so that she could include the photos taken on the actual expedition.

I love that the author dl wrote Mrs. Caroline Alexander has written a superb, well-researched and absolutely gripping account of the journey and the subsequent epic survival of all the men against all odds once the ship sinks deep in the Weddel sea.
